JWANENG MINE MARANYANE BOKAMOSO PROGRAMME - INNOVATION CAMP
Jwaneng Mine, in collaboration with Dare To Dream, conducted an innovation camp at Jwaneng from the 21st to 24th of September 2022. The camp had a significant impact on 33 girls from Matsha Senior School, Moshupa Senior School, Seepapitso Senior School, and Lobatse Senior School. The participants had been selected through a rigorous process where they responded to a call for applications and wrote essays on mine waste as part of the application criteria.
The four-day camp was held under the theme ‘RE-THINKING MINE WASTE.’ Students were introduced to soft skills, robotics, and coding training to enhance their interest and performance in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. It also included a mine tour to the landfill where students had an opportunity to appreciate the waste produced by the mine.
To gain insight into the students’ dreams and aspirations for the future, they were given the chance to create vision boards, visualizing their goals. The vision boards served as daily reminders of what they aimed to achieve, motivating them to turn their visions into reality.
Throughout the week, the girls participated in a series of soft skills training sessions facilitated by industry experts like Ms. Phetso Ntsowe from FNBB. She imparted knowledge on financial literacy and shared inspirational words, aiming to bolster their confidence to aspire to leadership roles in male-dominated industries. Mr. Moepi from Debswana also contributed, teaching the girls about time management. By the end of the day, the girls were fully engaged in the sessions, aligning their goals and dreams.
