In a powerful display of creativity, collaboration, and innovation, students from Flamingo Junior School, Nxakato Junior and Sowa primary school lit up the stage with presentations themed “Welcome to the Next Generation Thinkers: Stepping Into the Future of Mining.”
The student-led event, held on Friday, 1st August 2025, marked the culmination of a three-day STEM-focused program facilitated by Dare To Dream with generous support from Botswana Ash (BOTASH). The initiative aimed to introduce learners to the world of science, robotics, and teamwork while inspiring a passion for future careers in mining and technology.
The program began on Day 1 with an unforgettable mine tour into the Botswana Ash Mine led by Obby Koko – Process Engineer. Students were given the rare opportunity to learn first-hand about the operations of the mine, gaining insight into its processes as well as some of the challenges it faces daily. This experience formed the foundation for the rest of the program, after the tour, students embarked on research sessions where they brainstormed solutions to the identified challenges.
On Day 2, the learners transformed their ideas into tangible concepts by building prototypes of their solutions using LEGO robotics kits. Guided by facilitators, they explored how robotics could address real-world problems particularly in improving safety, efficiency, and sustainability within mining.
Finally, on Day 3, excitement filled the hall as students proudly presented their innovative solutions before judges, guests, and their teachers. Divided into Team A and Team B, each group showcased not only their knowledge of robotics but also their creativity in reimagining how technology can support the future of mining.
The event opened with remarks from Mr. Darcy, Principal of Flamingo International School, who praised the students’ enthusiasm and highlighted the importance of exposing young learners to real-world STEM experiences early. The morning also featured a keynote address by Mr. Othusitse Mookamo, Acting Managing Director of BOTASH, who reaffirmed the company’s commitment to youth development in Sowa Town through initiatives like this one.
“This is an inspiring program that impacts the Sowa Town community, and we will continue to impact it going forward with this program,” said Mr. Mookamo.
After intense but fun-filled presentations, judges deliberated to select a winning team. However, every child walked away a winner, receiving a certificate of participation and, more importantly, a renewed sense of confidence and curiosity.
One of the most moving moments came when Neo, a nine-year-old from Sowa Primary School, reflected on her experience. She shared passionately:
“Before this week, I didn’t know anything about robots. But now I understand how they can help in mining. What I enjoyed the most was teamwork, working together with my new friends to solve problems. Teamwork makes everything possible.”
Her testimony captured the heart of the program: discovery, collaboration, and empowerment. AsBotswana continues to grow its knowledge economy, programs like these ensure that even its youngest citizens are equipped to dream boldly and think beyond the classroom.
